Skaters for Tyre
Memphis skateboarders show solidarity.
The family of Tyre Nichols, ahead of their viewing of the bodycam footage of the police interaction that resulted in the death of Tyre, called upon the skateboard community to gather outside Memphis City Hall this morning.
“Skateboarding was his life, and it would show that his spirit lives on,” the family says.
Shirley A., a Memphis grandmother of three black young men ages 18, 16, and 7, shared that she “can feel his mother’s pain.”
“I am a black grandmother scared for the life of my children and grandchildren. Just leave us alone to raise our children.”
She further said that her entire family feels like they have PTSD. “We don’t come out. They don’t play outside.”
When asked what she hopes comes of the situation, she says, “We’re going to get justice for Tyre.”
Kameron Blakely, a local Memphis skateboarder, said he didn’t know Tyre but came out this morning because “solidarity means everything.”
Attorney Ben Crump will hold a news conference at 1:00 PM this afternoon.
